The Google Maps "3-Pack": Why It Matters for Your Business

When someone searches for a local business or service on Google, the top section shows a map with 3 business listings — this is called the "Local 3-Pack" or "Map Pack". These 3 businesses get the majority of clicks from local searchers.

Studies show that 44% of people click on the Google Maps listings for local searches — more than the organic blue links below. Getting into the top 3 of Google Maps for your category and city is one of the highest-value things you can do for your business.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and claim your business. If your business already appears on Google Maps, you can claim it. Google will verify your business via postcard, phone call or video verification.

Important: Use your exact legal business name. Do not add keywords to your business name (e.g. "Joboo Web - Best Web Design Ludhiana") — this violates Google's guidelines and can get your listing suspended.

Step 2: Complete Every Section of Your Profile

Google rewards completeness. Businesses with 100% complete profiles rank significantly higher than those with missing information.

Mandatory sections to complete:

  • Business name (exact legal name)
  • Business category — choose the most accurate primary category first
  • Address — use your exact address, match it on your website
  • Phone number — use a local number if possible
  • Website URL
  • Business hours — including special hours for holidays
  • Business description (750 characters) — include your city and main services

Step 3: Add Photos (This Makes a Huge Difference)

Google's data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without. Yet most Indian business listings have zero photos.

Photos to upload:

  • Exterior photos — your shop/office from outside, including the signboard
  • Interior photos — what customers see when they walk in
  • Team photos — put a human face to your business
  • Product/service photos — what you offer
  • Logo (400x400px minimum)
  • Cover photo (1024x575px recommended)

Upload at least 10 photos when setting up. Add 2-3 new photos every month to show your profile is active.

Step 4: Get Google Reviews Strategically

Reviews are the single strongest ranking factor in Google Maps. The number of reviews, average star rating, recency of reviews and whether you respond all affect your ranking.

Review generation system for Indian businesses:

  1. Get your Google review link from your GBP dashboard
  2. Shorten it using bit.ly
  3. After every completed job, WhatsApp the customer: "Thank you [Name]! If you're happy with our service, a quick Google review would mean the world to us: [link]"
  4. Set a weekly reminder to follow up with customers who haven't reviewed yet
  5. Respond to every single review within 24 hours

Step 5: Post Weekly Updates

Google Business Profile Posts are like mini social media posts that appear directly on your listing in Google Search and Maps. Businesses that post regularly rank higher than those that do not.

Post ideas:

  • New offer or discount (with expiry date)
  • New product or service launch
  • Recent project or case study
  • Festival greetings with a special offer
  • Useful tip relevant to your industry

Aim for at least 2 posts per month — Google favours active profiles.

Step 6: Answer Customer Questions (Q&A Section)

The Q&A section of your GBP lets anyone (including you) ask and answer questions about your business. Pre-populate this section by asking and answering your own FAQs:

  • "What are your working hours?"
  • "Do you offer home visits?"
  • "What areas do you serve?"
  • "What is your minimum order?"

This content appears in search results and helps potential customers instantly — and Google sees it as valuable content.

How Long Until You Rank in the Top 3?

For low-competition local keywords (e.g. "web designer in a small town"), a fully optimised profile can reach top 3 within 4-8 weeks. For competitive categories in large cities (e.g. "restaurant in Chandigarh"), expect 3-6 months of consistent effort.

The key factors are: reviews, profile completeness, post frequency, website quality and local citations consistency.
