What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security technology that encrypts data transmitted between a user browser and your website server. When your website has SSL installed, the URL starts with https:// instead of http://, and a padlock icon appears in the browser address bar.

Without SSL, Google Chrome shows a "Not Secure" warning to visitors — which drives away customers before they even read your content.

Why SSL is Non-Negotiable in 2025

1. Google Requires It

Google officially confirmed that HTTPS is a ranking factor. Websites with SSL rank higher than identical websites without it. Additionally, Google Chrome — the most used browser in India — actively warns users about non-HTTPS websites.

2. Customers Will Not Trust Your Website Without It

The "Not Secure" warning in Chrome kills conversions. Studies show that over 85% of users will leave a website immediately when they see this warning — especially if they are about to fill a contact form or make a payment.

3. It Protects Your Customers Data

When a customer fills your contact form, SSL ensures their name, phone number, and email are encrypted in transit — so they cannot be intercepted by hackers. This is your responsibility as a website owner.

4. It is Required for Online Payments

If your website accepts any form of payment — UPI, credit card, Razorpay — SSL is mandatory. Payment gateways will not integrate with non-HTTPS websites. This is a hard requirement, not optional.

Types of SSL Certificates

  • Domain Validation (DV) SSL: Basic encryption — sufficient for most business websites. Available free through Let Encrypt.
  • Organization Validation (OV) SSL: Verifies your organization identity — better for corporate and e-commerce websites.
  • Extended Validation (EV) SSL: Highest trust level — shows your company name in the browser bar. Best for banking and large e-commerce.

How to Get an SSL Certificate

Free option: Most modern web hosts include a free SSL certificate via Let Encrypt. In cPanel, look for "SSL/TLS" or "Let Encrypt SSL" and install it in a few clicks — completely free.

Paid option: If you need OV or EV SSL, purchase from providers like Comodo, DigiCert, or through your hosting provider.

What to Do After Installing SSL

  • Set up 301 redirects from http:// to https:// so all visitors automatically get the secure version
  • Update your Google Search Console to the https:// version of your site
  • Update your Google My Business website URL to https://
  • Check all internal links on your website — update any that still use http://
  • Test your SSL at ssllabs.com/ssltest — aim for an A or A+ rating

SSL Certificate Renewal

Free Let Encrypt certificates expire every 90 days but most hosting providers auto-renew them. Paid certificates typically last 1-2 years. Set a calendar reminder to renew before expiry — an expired SSL certificate shows a scary warning to all visitors and effectively takes your website offline.
