Free SSL vs Paid SSL Certificates: Is Let's Encrypt Enough for Your Business?

Every business website needs HTTPS. Most hosting companies now include free SSL certificates, often from Let's Encrypt, while others sell paid certificates. So what's the real difference in free SSL vs paid SSL, and does your business need to pay?

The encryption is the same

A free Let's Encrypt certificate and a paid certificate use the same encryption strength. Visitors see the same padlock, and Google treats HTTPS the same for ranking. For the vast majority of small business websites, free SSL is enough.

Types of certificates

Domain Validated (DV)

Proves you control the domain. Issued automatically in minutes. Let's Encrypt and most free host certificates are DV.

Organisation Validated (OV)

The certificate authority also verifies your company's details. These appear in the certificate information, though most visitors never look.

Extended Validation (EV)

Stricter company checks. Browsers no longer show the company name prominently in the address bar as they once did, so the visible benefit is now small.

When a paid certificate can make sense

  • Organisation details required: some enterprise clients, tenders or partners ask for OV/EV certificates
  • Warranty and support: paid certificates include a warranty and vendor support
  • Special setups: certain wildcard or multi-domain needs, or systems that can't automate renewals
  • Longer manual management: environments where 90-day automated renewals are difficult

Free SSL works best when renewals are automatic

Let's Encrypt certificates are short-lived and renew automatically on most hosts. Problems happen when: - DNS points somewhere else and validation fails - The site is behind a proxy/CDN not configured correctly - A custom server has no renewal job

Set up monitoring so you're alerted before expiry. See SSL errors explained.

Wildcard certificates

A wildcard covers all subdomains (*.yourdomain.com). Let's Encrypt supports wildcard certificates via DNS validation. Many hosts and Cloudflare also cover subdomains for free. See Cloudflare free plan.

Don't forget the rest of HTTPS

A certificate alone isn't enough: - Redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS - Fix mixed content (images or scripts loaded over http://) - Update internal links and canonical tags to HTTPS - Consider HSTS once everything works

Watch for upsells

If a provider tells you that you must buy a paid certificate to rank on Google or to be "secure", that's misleading. Ask what specific problem the paid certificate solves for you.

FAQs

Does a paid SSL certificate improve SEO?

No. Google treats valid HTTPS the same regardless of certificate type.

Is free SSL safe for online payments?

Yes for the encryption itself. Payment security also depends on your payment gateway, which handles card data. See payment gateways guide.
