Many businesses do SEO once at launch and never look again. Months later they notice traffic has dropped, often due to a problem that would have been easy to fix early. A short monthly routine prevents that. You don't need advanced skills, just access to Google Search Console, Google Analytics and your Google Business Profile.
Minutes 1–10: Google Search Console
Performance
- Compare the last 28 days with the previous period
- Check clicks, impressions and average position
- Look at top queries and pages. Any big drops?
Indexing
- Pages report: new errors or a sudden rise in "not indexed" pages? See fixing indexing problems
- Sitemaps: status "Success" and recently read
Experience
- Core Web Vitals: any URLs moved to "Poor"? See PageSpeed Insights explained
- HTTPS: all pages served securely
Security & manual actions
- Should both say no issues detected. If not, act immediately
Minutes 11–15: Google Analytics 4
- Organic search sessions vs last month and last year (seasonality matters)
- Top landing pages from organic search
- Key events: form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks. Are leads holding steady?
See GA4 for beginners.
Minutes 16–22: Google Business Profile
- Respond to all new reviews (thank positive ones, address negative ones calmly)
- Check that hours, phone and address are correct, and update holiday hours
- Add a post or update (offer, project photo, news)
- Add a few new photos
- Check Q&A for new questions
- Note calls, direction requests and website clicks
Minutes 23–27: Content
- Pick one important page or blog post and improve it: update dates, add an FAQ, add a recent example or photo, refresh prices. See content refresh
- Note one new topic customers asked about this month. Plan a post or FAQ answer
Minutes 28–30: Quick technical checks
- Submit your main contact form and confirm it arrives
- Open your site on your phone. Does everything look right?
- Spot-check for broken links on key pages. See fix broken links
- Confirm the latest backup exists
Quarterly extras
Every three months, also: - Check competitors' rankings and Google profiles. See local SEO competitor analysis - Review backlinks and brand mentions - Run a full speed test on top pages - Review titles and meta descriptions of pages with low click-through rates
Keep a simple log
A sheet with the month, key numbers (clicks, leads, reviews, average rating) and actions taken. After six months you'll clearly see trends and what worked.
When to call for help
- Sudden traffic drops of 30% or more
- Security issues or manual actions
- Many pages dropping out of the index
