Multi-Location SEO: How Businesses With Several Branches Can Rank in Every City

A business with branches in Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Mohali needs each location to rank locally. Here's how to set up profiles and pages without duplicate content.

When a business opens a second or third branch — a clinic chain, coaching institute, showroom, restaurant group or taxi company with offices in several cities — local SEO becomes more complex. Each branch needs to appear in "near me" and city searches for its own area, without the branches competing against each other or creating duplicate content.

Rule 1: One Google Business Profile per real location

Every branch that is staffed during business hours and serves customers on-site can have its own profile. Each needs:

  • The same brand name (with no keyword stuffing) — for example "Joboo Dental Care", not "Joboo Dental Care Best Dentist Mohali".
  • Its own address, phone number and hours.
  • Its own photos, services and posts.
  • A link to its own location page on your website, not the homepage.

Use a Business Profile group (formerly location group) to manage all branches from one account. Businesses with ten or more locations can use bulk verification. Don't create profiles for cities where you have no staffed premises — that breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension. See service-area businesses if you serve areas without offices.

Rule 2: A unique page for each branch

Each location page should be genuinely different. Include:

ElementExample
Address and mapEmbedded map, landmarks, parking notes
Branch-specific detailsTimings, doctors or team at that branch, facilities
Local photosThat branch's exterior and interior
Services available hereNot every branch offers everything
Local reviewsReviews from that branch's customers
Area servedNearby neighbourhoods and towns
Branch FAQs"Is there parking?", "Nearest bus stop?"

Copying one template and changing only the city name produces thin, duplicate pages that Google may choose not to index. See duplicate content explained.

Rule 3: A clear website structure

  • A Locations page listing all branches with links.
  • Clean URLs such as /locations/ludhiana-model-town.
  • Location pages linked from the menu or footer.
  • Service pages linking to branches that offer that service.

Our guide to website structure and URLs explains how to organise this.

Rule 4: Consistent business details everywhere

Each branch's name, address and phone number should match exactly on its Google profile, location page, directories and social pages. Keep a master sheet of branch details and update it whenever anything changes. See local citations.

Rule 5: Structured data per location

Add LocalBusiness (or a more specific type, such as Dentist or Restaurant) schema on each location page with that branch's address, phone, hours and geo-coordinates. Link each branch to the parent organisation using parentOrganization or a shared @id.

Rule 6: Reviews for each branch

Ask customers to review the specific branch they visited. Give each branch its own QR code linking to its profile's review form. Branch managers should reply to their reviews promptly and professionally.

Common problems

  • One phone number for all branches — use local numbers where possible, or at least make each profile's number reach the right branch.
  • Closed branches left active — mark them permanently closed and redirect the old location page to the nearest branch.
  • Branches cannibalising each other — if two branches are close together, their pages should clearly describe different areas served.
  • Franchisee-created profiles — make sure the brand owner retains ownership. See ownership and access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one website rank for several cities?

Yes, with a strong location page for each real branch and genuine local signals for each.

Should each branch have its own website?

Usually no. One strong brand website with location pages is easier to manage and builds authority in one place.

Can I add a branch that only operates part-time?

Only if it keeps consistent, posted hours when customers can visit. Otherwise list it as a service area of the main branch.

How do I track leads by branch?

Use separate phone numbers, UTM links on each profile's website button, and branch selection in forms.
