When you book an outstation taxi — Ludhiana to Delhi airport, Chandigarh to Manali, Amritsar to Jammu — the operator will usually ask: sedan, Ertiga or Innova? The answer depends on four things: how many people are travelling, how much luggage you have, what kind of roads you'll drive on, and your budget. This guide helps you choose in under a minute.

Sedan: best value for small groups

Sedans like the Swift Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Toyota Etios are the most booked outstation taxis in Punjab. They're economical, comfortable for three adults on a highway, and usually the cheapest per km.

  • Seats: 4 passengers maximum; 3 adults are comfortable for long trips.
  • Boot space: roughly two large suitcases plus a couple of small bags. CNG sedans may have less boot space because of the gas cylinder — ask the operator.
  • Best for: airport drops for 1–2 travellers, business trips, couples, small families on plain routes.

Ertiga: the middle option

The Maruti Ertiga (and similar MPVs) seats six or seven, but with all three rows in use there's little luggage space. With the third row folded, it carries four or five people with plenty of bags.

  • Best for: families of 4–5 on plain routes who want more space than a sedan at a lower price than an Innova.
  • Limitation: less comfortable than an Innova on long hill drives and rough roads.

Innova Crysta: comfort and luggage

The Toyota Innova Crysta is the default premium taxi across North India for good reason: strong engine, comfortable suspension, captain seats in many versions, and space for six passengers plus luggage (more luggage with fewer passengers or a roof carrier).

  • Best for: families, elderly passengers, NRI airport trips with heavy luggage, hill-station trips, weddings.
  • Cost: usually noticeably higher per km than a sedan — but split across 5–6 people, often cheaper per person.

Luggage: the most common mistake

Travellers heading to Canada, the UK or Australia often carry two 23 kg suitcases each plus cabin bags. Four such passengers will not fit in a sedan. Always tell the operator the number and size of bags, not just the number of people. Many operators offer a roof carrier for extra luggage — ask in advance and make sure bags are covered in case of rain.

Hill routes need the right car

For Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie or Spiti, choose a car with good power and ground clearance, and an experienced hill driver. A loaded sedan struggles on steep climbs, and many hill-trip complaints come from choosing the cheapest car. In snow season, ask whether the car carries snow chains.

What affects the fare

  • Car type (sedan < Ertiga < Innova Crysta)
  • One way vs round trip
  • Tolls, parking and state entry taxes (included or extra)
  • Driver night allowance for overnight trips
  • Waiting time and extra stops

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 4 adults travel comfortably in a sedan?

For short trips, yes. For trips over 4–5 hours with luggage, an Ertiga or Innova is much more comfortable.

Is a CNG car fine for outstation trips?

On plain highway routes, yes, and it's often cheaper. Check boot space and refuelling stops for longer routes, and prefer diesel/petrol SUVs for hills.

Which car is best for elderly parents?

An Innova Crysta — higher seats are easier to get in and out of, and the ride is smoother.

Should I book a tempo traveller for 7 people?

For 7 or more people with luggage, yes. An Innova can seat 7 but leaves almost no luggage space.
