Speed Up a Slow WordPress Site: A Step-by-Step Checklist

WordPress isn't slow by nature; most slow WordPress sites suffer from the same handful of problems. Work through this checklist in order.

A slow WordPress site loses visitors, enquiries and rankings. The good news is that most slowdowns have common causes, and you can fix many of them without rebuilding the site. Work through these steps in order and test after each one.

Back up your site before making changes. See website backup guide.

Step 1: Measure first

Run your homepage and one key inner page through PageSpeed Insights, and note the scores, LCP, INP and CLS. Test on mobile. Also check how long the server takes to respond (TTFB). See PageSpeed Insights explained.

Step 2: Check hosting and PHP

  • Is the server response slow even for simple pages? The hosting plan may be overloaded
  • Use a current, supported PHP version (often a big speed boost). See upgrade PHP safely
  • Choose a data centre close to your visitors (India or Singapore for Indian audiences)

Step 3: Turn on page caching

Install one caching plugin that matches your server: - LiteSpeed Cache on LiteSpeed hosting (including Hostinger) - WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache on others

Page caching alone often makes a dramatic difference.

Step 4: Audit plugins

  • Deactivate plugins you don't use, then delete them
  • Look for heavy plugins: sliders, social feeds, page builder add-on packs, "all-in-one" toolkits
  • Test speed with suspicious plugins deactivated one at a time
  • Replace heavy plugins with lighter alternatives or simple code

See essential WordPress plugins.

Step 5: Optimise images

  • Resize images to the size they're displayed at
  • Compress and convert to WebP
  • Lazy load below-the-fold images; don't lazy load the hero. See lazy loading done right

Step 6: Clean the database

Over time, WordPress collects revisions, spam comments, expired transients and leftover data from deleted plugins. Clean these with your caching plugin's database tools or a dedicated plugin, and limit stored revisions. See database optimisation.

Step 7: Reduce CSS and JavaScript

  • Enable minification and combine carefully (test, as it can break layouts)
  • Defer non-critical JavaScript
  • Remove unused CSS where your tools support it
  • Avoid loading page-builder assets on pages that don't use them

Step 8: Fonts

  • Limit to one or two font families and a few weights
  • Host fonts locally and use font-display: swap
  • Preload the main font

See web fonts and speed.

Step 9: Third-party scripts

Chat widgets, multiple tracking pixels, embedded social feeds and video players add up. Remove what you don't need and delay the rest. See reduce third-party scripts.

Step 10: Add a CDN

Cloudflare's free plan can cache static files closer to visitors and add protection. See Cloudflare for small business.

Step 11: Re-test and monitor

Re-run PageSpeed Insights. Check real-user data in Search Console's Core Web Vitals report over the following weeks. Lab scores change instantly; real-user data updates over about a month.

When to consider a rebuild

If the theme or page builder itself is very heavy, or the site relies on dozens of plugins, a lean rebuild (WordPress with a lightweight theme, or custom PHP) may be faster and cheaper to maintain in the long run.
