Topical Authority SEO Guide 2026: Build Topic Clusters That Rank

Sites that cover one subject deeply tend to outrank sites with scattered articles. Here's how to plan pillar pages and topic clusters that build topical authority — with a worked example.

Topical authority is the trust a website earns on a subject by covering it thoroughly and consistently. A site with 30 interlinked, high-quality articles about taxi services in Punjab — routes, fares, airport transfers, vehicle choices, travel tips — will usually outrank a general site that has one taxi article among hundreds of unrelated posts. Search engines and AI assistants prefer sources that clearly "own" a topic.

Pillar pages and topic clusters

The practical way to build topical authority is the hub-and-spoke model:

  • Pillar page (hub): a comprehensive page on a broad topic, e.g. "Website Design for Small Businesses in India".
  • Cluster pages (spokes): detailed articles on specific sub-topics, e.g. "website cost", "WordPress vs custom PHP", "must-have features", "how to choose a web designer", "website redesign signs".
  • Internal links: every cluster page links to the pillar, the pillar links to every cluster page, and related clusters link to each other.

This structure helps crawlers discover all pages, shows how they relate, and passes authority across the cluster.

Step 1: Choose your core topics

Pick 3–5 topics that directly connect to what you sell. For a web agency: website design, SEO, Google Ads, hosting & domains. For a taxi company: routes from your city, airport transfers, hill-station trips, vehicle hire. Do not chase unrelated viral topics — they dilute your focus.

Step 2: Map the sub-topics

For each core topic, list every question a customer might ask from first awareness to purchase. Sources: customer calls and WhatsApp chats, Google's "People also ask", autocomplete, competitor sites and Search Console queries.

Step 3: Build a content map

Here is a sample cluster for a web design business:

  • Use descriptive anchor text ("website cost in India"), not "click here".
  • Link from informational articles to the relevant service page — this is how blog traffic turns into enquiries.
  • Add a "Related guides" section at the end of each cluster article.
  • Fix orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them).

Step 5: Avoid cannibalisation

Two pages targeting the same question compete with each other. If you have duplicates — "Local SEO guide" and "Local SEO guide for Indian businesses" — merge them into one strong page and 301-redirect the weaker URL. We did exactly this on our own blog during this update.

Step 6: Keep the cluster fresh

Update the pillar page whenever you add a new cluster article, refresh prices and facts yearly, and expand articles that start getting impressions for new queries in Search Console.

How to measure topical authority

  • Number of queries your site ranks for within the topic (Search Console, filtered by pages in the cluster).
  • Average position trend for the cluster's main terms.
  • Leads from cluster articles to service pages (GA4 path exploration).
  • Citations in AI answers for questions in your topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many articles do I need for topical authority?

There is no fixed number. Cover all the important questions in your topic well; for a local service niche that might be 15–30 quality pages per core topic.

Can a small site build topical authority?

Yes — focus is the advantage. A small site that goes deep on one niche can outrank large general sites on that niche.

Should I delete unrelated old posts?

If they get no traffic, have no links and do not fit your topics, consider improving, merging or removing them with appropriate redirects.

Is topical authority an official Google ranking factor?

Google has described systems that identify sites with expertise on topics. Whether you call it topical authority or not, deep, well-organised topic coverage consistently performs better.
