UPI has become the default way to pay in India. If your website takes advance bookings, orders or fees, UPI payment integration on your website can increase completed payments and reduce manual follow-up. But a QR code image on a page is not the same as a proper integration. Here's what to know.

Three ways to accept UPI on a website

Gateways like Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe PG and others include UPI alongside cards and net banking. - Mobile: "UPI intent" opens the customer's UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) directly - Desktop: shows a dynamic QR or lets the customer enter a UPI ID - Confirmation: the gateway notifies your website automatically (webhook), so orders are marked paid without manual checking - Refunds and reports handled through the gateway dashboard

Generate a link from the gateway dashboard or API and send it on WhatsApp or email. Good for service businesses that quote first and collect later.

3. Static QR code

Showing your business UPI QR on the website is simple, but: - You must manually match payments to orders - Customers may pay the wrong amount - No automatic confirmation

Use static QR only for very low volumes.

How a proper integration works

  1. Customer clicks Pay
  2. Your server creates an order with the gateway (amount, reference)
  3. Customer pays in their UPI app
  4. Gateway sends a webhook to your server
  5. Your server verifies the signature, marks the order paid and sends confirmation
  6. Customer sees a success page

Never mark an order paid based only on the browser's redirect. Always verify on the server.

Setup checklist

  • Business bank account and KYC documents (PAN, GST if applicable, business proof)
  • Website with clear pricing, refund policy, terms, privacy policy and contact details. Gateways review these. See return and refund policy
  • HTTPS on the whole site
  • Webhook URL configured and tested
  • Test mode transactions before going live

Costs

Gateways charge transaction fees that vary by payment method and plan, and pricing for UPI has changed over time. Check current rates and any setup or annual fees.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting the redirect instead of verifying the webhook
  • Not handling "pending" UPI payments (some complete minutes later)
  • Duplicate orders when customers retry
  • No reconciliation between gateway settlements and orders
  • Forgetting refunds for cancelled orders

UPI for recurring payments

For subscriptions or monthly fees, look at UPI AutoPay mandates offered by gateways. See recurring payments on your website.

FAQs

Is UPI payment integration safe?

Yes, when done through a regulated gateway with server-side verification. Your website never sees the customer's UPI PIN.

Can I accept UPI without a payment gateway?

Yes, with a static QR, but you'll lose automatic confirmation and reconciliation.
