A new website should bring more customers — not fewer. Yet many redesigns cause a sudden drop in Google traffic because old pages disappear, URLs change without redirects, or important content is removed. Follow this checklist before, during and after launch.
Before launch
- Crawl the old site and export every URL (use a crawler or your sitemap).
- Export top pages from Search Console and Analytics — know which pages bring traffic and leads.
- Create a URL map: old URL → new URL for every page. Keep URLs the same where possible.
- Keep important content: don't drop pages that rank just because they look old — improve them.
- Carry over titles, meta descriptions and headings for ranking pages (then improve carefully).
- Build the new site on a staging URL blocked from indexing (password or
noindex).
Redirects
- Use 301 (permanent) redirects from each old URL to the most relevant new URL.
- Avoid redirect chains (A → B → C) and redirecting everything to the homepage.
- Redirect old variations too:
.phpURLs,www/non-www,http/https. - Pages truly removed with no equivalent can return 404 or 410.
Launch day
- Remove staging
noindexand password protection. - Check robots.txt doesn't block the site.
- Test redirects for your top 50 URLs.
- Submit the new XML sitemap in Search Console.
- Check canonical tags point to the new URLs.
- Test forms, calls, WhatsApp buttons and analytics tracking.
After launch (first 4–8 weeks)
- Monitor Search Console for 404 errors and fix with redirects.
- Watch impressions and clicks for top pages.
- Update internal links to point directly to new URLs.
- Update links on your Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
Some ranking fluctuation in the first weeks is normal. A drop that continues usually means missing redirects, removed content or indexing blocks.
Changing domain name?
Use Search Console's Change of Address tool after setting up 301 redirects from every old URL to the new domain, and keep the old domain renewed for at least a year or two.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a redesign improve my rankings?
It can, if it improves speed, content and structure. A redesign without SEO planning can just as easily hurt rankings.
How long should redirects stay?
As long as possible — ideally permanently.
Can I change from WordPress to PHP without losing SEO?
Yes, with a complete URL map, 301 redirects and preserved content.
