Run your website through three different speed tools and you'll likely get three different scores. That's normal: each tool tests differently. Knowing what each of the popular website speed test tools measures helps you focus on fixes that matter.
Google PageSpeed Insights
- What it shows: real-user Core Web Vitals (when your site has enough traffic) plus a Lighthouse lab test with recommendations
- Best for: seeing what Google sees; mobile performance
- Note: the lab score varies between runs; field data matters more. See PageSpeed Insights explained
Google Search Console: Core Web Vitals report
- What it shows: groups of URLs rated Good / Needs improvement / Poor based on real users over 28 days
- Best for: finding which page templates have problems across the whole site
GTmetrix
- What it shows: Lighthouse-based metrics, a waterfall chart of every file loaded, page size and request count
- Best for: seeing exactly which images, scripts or fonts slow a page
- Note: choose a test location close to your audience where the plan allows
WebPageTest
- What it shows: very detailed tests from many locations, devices and connection speeds; filmstrip view; repeat-view (cached) tests
- Best for: deep diagnosis, testing slow mobile connections, comparing before/after
Chrome DevTools
- What it shows: Network and Performance panels on your own machine; Lighthouse built in; throttling to simulate slow phones
- Best for: developers debugging specific problems
Quick guide
| Question | Tool |
|---|---|
| Does Google consider my site fast for real users? | PageSpeed Insights (field data), Search Console |
| Which file is slowing my page? | GTmetrix or WebPageTest waterfall |
| How does it feel on a slow 4G phone? | WebPageTest or DevTools throttling |
| Did my fix help? | Same tool, same settings, before and after |
How to test properly
- Test the pages that matter: homepage, top service pages, top blog posts, product pages
- Test mobile first
- Run each test two or three times and look at the median
- Change one thing at a time, then re-test
- Remember that real-user data takes weeks to update after fixes
Common fixes these tools point to
- Oversized images. See image optimisation
- Hero image lazy-loaded. See lazy loading done right
- Too many third-party scripts. See third-party scripts
- Slow server response. See reduce TTFB
- Missing caching. See browser caching
FAQs
Which website speed test tool is most accurate?
None is "the" truth. Lab tools simulate conditions; real-user data (Chrome UX Report in PageSpeed Insights/Search Console) reflects actual visitors.
What score should I aim for?
Aim for "Good" Core Web Vitals for real users, not a perfect 100 lab score.
