Every business says it gives great service. Customers believe it when other customers say so. Testimonials and case studies are some of the most persuasive content you can have — but most small businesses either don't collect them or use vague, anonymous quotes that look invented. Here's how to collect real stories systematically and use them well.
Testimonials vs reviews vs case studies
| Type | What it is | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Online reviews | Public ratings on Google and other platforms | Search visibility and quick trust |
| Testimonials | Short quotes or videos you collect directly | Website pages, ads, proposals |
| Case studies | Detailed stories: problem, solution, result | High-value services and B2B sales |
Use all three. Encourage reviews on Google first — see how to get more Google reviews — then collect richer testimonials and case studies from your happiest customers.
When to ask
- Right after a visible success: project handover, trip completed, treatment finished, event done.
- When a customer praises you spontaneously — "Can I share what you just said?"
- When results become measurable — e.g. a website that started bringing leads after three months.
How to ask (and get useful answers)
"Can you write a testimonial?" usually gets "Great service, thanks!" Ask specific questions instead:
- What problem were you facing before you contacted us?
- Why did you choose us?
- What was the experience like?
- What result did you get?
- Would you recommend us, and to whom?
You can ask these on a short call or WhatsApp voice note, then write a draft from their answers and send it for approval. Many customers are happy to approve but don't have time to write.
Video testimonials
- Keep them short — 30 to 90 seconds.
- Film in good light with clear audio; a phone is enough.
- Let people speak in the language they're comfortable with — Punjabi, Hindi or English — and add subtitles.
- Don't script; prompt with the questions above.
Video is especially powerful for travel, education, healthcare and home services.
Turning projects into case studies
Structure every case study the same way:
- Client and context: who they are (with permission), industry, location.
- Challenge: what wasn't working.
- Approach: what you did, step by step.
- Results: specific numbers where possible — leads per month, bookings, time saved — and the time period.
- Quote: the client's own words.
- Visuals: before/after, screenshots, photos.
Be accurate about results and timeframes. Don't claim credit for results caused by other factors.
Permission and honesty
- Get written permission (WhatsApp or email is fine) to use the name, photo, quote and logo.
- Offer anonymity ("Clinic owner, Mohali") if the client prefers.
- Never edit a testimonial to change its meaning; light grammar corrections with approval are fine.
- Never invent testimonials or use stock photos as "customers". Fake reviews can violate consumer protection rules and platform policies, and they destroy trust when discovered. See website trust signals.
Where to use them
- Service pages: testimonials relevant to that specific service.
- Near calls to action: a short quote beside the enquiry form reduces hesitation.
- Homepage: two or three strong, varied stories.
- Ads: real customer quotes and video clips (follow platform policies).
- Proposals and quotations for B2B and high-value work.
- Social media and WhatsApp Status.
Don't add review schema markup for testimonials you host about your own business — Google doesn't show self-serving review stars for local businesses and organisations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy Google reviews onto my website?
You can quote them with attribution, or embed them using approved widgets. Link to the original reviews where possible.
How many testimonials should I show?
Quality over quantity: a few specific, relevant stories per page beat a long wall of generic praise.
What if a customer later asks me to remove their testimonial?
Remove it promptly. Respecting that request protects your reputation.
Should I offer discounts for testimonials?
Avoid rewards for reviews on platforms like Google. For website testimonials, a simple thank-you is better than payment.
