Shopify and WooCommerce work for most online stores. But some businesses find that a platform forces them into a workflow that doesn't fit. Maybe they sell 30 products, take orders on WhatsApp, or have different prices for wholesale buyers. For them, a custom-built store can be simpler, faster and cheaper to run.

What "custom store" means

A website built specifically for your business, usually in PHP and MySQL, with an admin panel to manage products, orders and settings. It has only the features you need, nothing more.

When custom makes sense

1. Small catalogue, simple ordering

If you sell 10–100 products and orders are straightforward, a lean custom store avoids monthly subscriptions and app fees.

2. Enquiry or WhatsApp-based ordering

Many Indian businesses confirm orders on WhatsApp: furniture, custom clothing, sweets, industrial parts. A custom site can show products and send a cart summary to WhatsApp instead of forcing online payment.

3. B2B or wholesale pricing

Different prices for retail and wholesale customers, minimum order quantities, quote requests, login-only pricing. These are easier to build exactly as you need than to assemble from apps. See B2B wholesale e-commerce.

4. Local delivery rules

Delivery only within certain pincodes, time slots, same-day cut-offs or delivery fees by distance. These are easy in a custom build.

5. Speed is critical

A custom store loads only what it needs, which helps on slow mobile networks.

When a platform is better

  • Large catalogues with many variants
  • You need many integrations (marketplaces, ERPs, advanced email marketing)
  • You want to try many apps and features without developer help
  • You expect very rapid growth and frequent changes
  • Nobody can maintain a custom codebase

Pros and cons

Custom store pros - No monthly platform fee or app subscriptions - Exactly your workflow - Fast and lightweight - Full ownership of code and data

Custom store cons - Every new feature needs development - Relies on a developer for updates and security - Fewer ready-made integrations

What a custom store should include

  • Product pages with photos, prices, variants (size/colour) and stock status
  • Cart and checkout (or WhatsApp order summary)
  • Payment gateway (UPI, cards) and/or COD
  • Order management in the admin panel, with status updates
  • Email/WhatsApp notifications to you and the customer
  • Basic GST invoice generation
  • SEO essentials: clean URLs, titles, product schema, sitemap
  • Security: HTTPS, secure admin login, protected forms

Cost thinking

A platform costs a subscription every month, forever, plus apps. A custom store costs more upfront but has low running costs (hosting and occasional maintenance). Over three years, the custom route is often cheaper if your needs are stable.

A practical test

Write down how an order flows in your business today, from enquiry to delivery and payment. If a platform can follow that flow with a few apps, use the platform. If you'd have to change how your business works to fit it, a custom store is worth considering.
