Designing Websites for Indian Users: Languages, Low-End Phones, Data Costs and Trust

Many design guides assume fast laptops and fibre internet. Indian users often browse on budget phones with patchy data. Here's how to design for them.

  9. A quick test

Much web design advice comes from markets where people browse on expensive phones with fast connections. In India, a large share of visitors use budget or mid-range Android phones, switch between 4G/5G and weak signals, and prefer to contact businesses on WhatsApp. Designing for these realities can noticeably improve results.

1. Design for budget Android phones first

  • Test on a mid-range Android device, not only on an iPhone or laptop
  • Keep JavaScript light; heavy scripts slow interaction on lower-power processors
  • Avoid huge sliders and autoplay videos on the homepage
  • Check common screen widths like 360–412 px

See mobile-first design.

2. Respect data and network conditions

  • Compress images and use WebP. See image optimisation
  • Lazy-load images below the first screen. See lazy loading done right
  • Avoid loading many web fonts and third-party scripts
  • Make sure text appears quickly even before images load
  • Keep page weight low, ideally a few hundred KB for the first view

3. WhatsApp and click-to-call first

Many Indian customers prefer a quick WhatsApp message or call over filling a form: - Show Call and WhatsApp buttons prominently, especially on mobile - Pre-fill WhatsApp messages with context ("Hi, I want a quote for…") - Keep a short form as a backup for those who prefer it

4. Language

  • Many users are comfortable with simple English; avoid complex phrasing
  • Consider Hindi or Punjabi versions for key pages if your customers prefer them, with proper hreflang setup. See multilingual SEO
  • Use fonts that render Devanagari and Gurmukhi well (e.g. Noto Sans families) if you publish in those scripts
  • Hinglish works in ads and social media; for website pages, clarity matters more than style

5. Trust signals that matter here

Indian buyers are cautious with unfamiliar businesses online. Help them trust you: - Real photos of your shop, office, vehicles and team - Full address with Google Maps - Genuine Google reviews - GSTIN and registration details where relevant - Clear pricing or price ranges, if possible. See showing prices on your website - Years in business and the areas you serve

See website trust signals.

6. Payments

  • UPI first, with cards, net banking and wallets as options
  • COD where appropriate for e-commerce
  • Clear refund and cancellation policies

7. Local context

  • Show service areas and cities clearly
  • Use local terms customers search for ("one way taxi", "kothi design", "marriage palace")
  • Mention local landmarks in addresses
  • Plan content around festivals and seasons

8. Accessibility for everyone

  • Large enough text (16 px minimum on mobile)
  • Strong contrast for outdoor viewing in bright sunlight
  • Big tap targets
  • Simple navigation for less tech-savvy users

A quick test

Open your website on a budget Android phone, switch to a slow network, and try to: 1. Understand what you do in five seconds 2. Find your phone number or WhatsApp button 3. Submit an enquiry

If any step is slow or confusing, that's where you're losing customers.
