"Should we put our rates on the website?" It's one of the most debated questions in any website project. Business owners worry that competitors will undercut them, or that customers will see a number and leave. On the other side, customers increasingly expect some idea of cost before they make contact — and many simply won't call a business that hides all pricing.

There's no single right answer. But there is a right way to decide.

The case for showing prices

  • Builds trust. Transparency signals you have nothing to hide.
  • Filters leads. People who contact you already accept your price range, so fewer calls end with "too expensive".
  • Saves time on repetitive price enquiries.
  • Helps SEO and AI answers. Many searches include "price", "cost", "rate" or "fare". Pages that explain pricing can match them — and AI assistants often quote such information.
  • Speeds up decisions for simple services.

The case against

  • Prices genuinely vary — custom work, projects that depend on site visits, fluctuating material costs.
  • Competitors can see them (though they can usually find out anyway by calling).
  • A number without context can look high compared with cheaper, lower-quality alternatives.
  • Outdated prices cause disputes if you forget to update them.
  • Platform or advertising rules — some ad landing pages work better without fixed numbers if prices change daily.

Middle paths that work well

ApproachExampleBest for
"Starting from" price"Business websites from ₹X"Services with a clear minimum
Price range"Most kitchens cost ₹X–₹Y"Projects that vary by size
PackagesBasic / Standard / Premium with inclusionsAgencies, salons, gyms, coaching
Price factors"Fare depends on car type, distance, tolls and waiting time"Taxi, logistics, custom manufacturing

"Price on WhatsApp in 5 minutes"Fast quote promiseWhen prices change often

Even if you decide not to publish numbers, always explain what affects the price. That alone answers much of the customer's worry. Our taxi fare calculation guide is an example of this approach.

How to decide for your business

  1. Do customers compare prices before calling? If yes (taxi fares, packages, standard services), show at least a starting price.
  2. Is your price a strength? If you're competitive, showing it is an advantage.
  3. Is your value hard to see? If you're more expensive, explain why before or alongside the price — quality, warranty, experience.
  4. How often do prices change? If often, use ranges or a "get today's price" CTA.
  5. Test it. Try showing starting prices for two months and compare enquiry numbers and quality.

Presenting prices well

  • Explain what's included and what's extra (GST, tolls, parking, delivery).
  • Put value before price: show the benefits, then the number.
  • Highlight a recommended package.
  • Add the date of last update for fast-changing prices.
  • Follow consumer rules: displayed prices should be accurate and not misleading.

Special cases

Taxi and travel: many operators show "per km" rates or popular route fares with "tolls and parking extra". This performs well because customers search for fares. Medical and legal services: consultation fees can usually be shown; treatment costs are better given as ranges after assessment. B2B manufacturing: prices depend on quantity and specification, so a fast "Request a Quote" process matters more than published rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will showing prices reduce my enquiries?

Sometimes total enquiries drop slightly, but quality usually improves. Many businesses see more bookings from fewer, better leads.

Should prices include GST?

For consumers, showing the final price or clearly stating "+ GST" avoids confusion and disputes.

Can I show different prices to different customers?

Quoting individually is normal for custom work. Just make sure any published prices are honoured.

Do prices on my site help Google Ads?

Clear, relevant information can improve landing page experience, one part of Quality Score.
