In Google Ads, the highest bidder doesn't automatically win. Google also considers how relevant and useful your ad and landing page are. Quality Score is a 1–10 diagnostic rating for each keyword that summarises this. Higher quality generally means better ad positions at lower cost per click.

The three components

ComponentWhat it means
Expected click-through rateHow likely people are to click your ad for that keyword, compared with other advertisers
Ad relevanceHow closely your ad matches the intent behind the keyword
Landing page experienceHow relevant, useful and easy to use your landing page is for people who click

Each is rated Below average, Average or Above average. You can add these columns in the Keywords view of Google Ads.

Improve expected CTR

  • Include the keyword (or close variants) in headlines naturally.
  • Mention specific benefits: price, speed, location, guarantee.
  • Use all relevant assets: sitelinks, callouts, call, location, structured snippets.
  • Remove keywords that attract irrelevant searches (add negatives).

Improve ad relevance

  • Group tightly related keywords into small ad groups (e.g., one per taxi route or per service).
  • Write ads specifically for each group instead of one generic ad everywhere.

Improve landing page experience

  • Send each ad group to the most relevant page — not always the homepage.
  • Match the headline on the page to the ad's promise.
  • Fast loading on mobile.
  • Clear contact options above the fold; transparent information (prices, process, location).
  • No intrusive pop-ups or misleading content.

Example: taxi business

Keyword "ludhiana to delhi airport taxi" → Ad: "Ludhiana to Delhi Airport Taxi | Fixed Fare, 24×7" → Landing page: dedicated route page with fares, travel time and booking buttons. Compare that with sending the same keyword to a generic homepage with a slider — the first setup almost always earns better Quality Scores.

Common myths

  • "Quality Score is used directly in the auction." It's a diagnostic summary; the auction uses real-time quality signals. Improving the components still improves performance.
  • "Higher budget improves Quality Score." No — relevance and experience do.
