For many small hotels, 70–90% of bookings come through OTAs. Moving even 15–20% of that to direct bookings can add lakhs to yearly profit. The goal isn't to leave OTAs. It's to stop depending on them for every guest.
Why direct matters
- No commission on the booking
- You own the guest's contact details for repeat stays
- You control cancellation terms and upsells
- Guests can call you directly about their needs
1. Make your website easy to book
A slow, outdated website sends guests back to the app. Essentials:
- Real photos, room-wise prices, and a clear Book Now or WhatsApp button
- Mobile speed under 3 seconds. See website speed guide
- Visible location, check-in time and policies
More detail: hotel website features that increase direct bookings.
2. Win on Google
Most guests check your Google listing before booking. Keep photos current, answer questions and reply to reviews. Turn on Google free booking links so your own rate appears next to the OTAs.
3. Give a perk, not just a lower price
"Book direct and get free breakfast / early check-in / 10% off at the restaurant" works well and is usually safer under OTA parity clauses than a lower room rate.
4. Convert OTA guests into direct guests
The OTA brings them once; you bring them back. At checkout:
- Ask for a review and share your WhatsApp number
- Give a "return guest" card with your direct number
- Send a festive greeting or season offer later, only to guests who agreed
See guest communication on WhatsApp.
5. Answer fast
A guest who calls or messages and waits 30 minutes books elsewhere. Set reply templates and a response target.
Track it
Each month, record bookings by source: OTA, website, phone/WhatsApp, walk-in, corporate. You can't grow what you don't measure.
FAQs
Is it legal to offer a lower price on my website?
It depends on your OTA contract. Many contracts restrict public rate differences, so check yours before you lower prices. Perks and member-only offers are common alternatives.
