How to Write FAQ Sections That Google and AI Assistants Quote

Well-written FAQs answer customers before they call, help Google understand your page, and give AI assistants a clean answer to quote. Here's how to write them properly.

FAQ sections used to be an afterthought — a few generic questions at the bottom of the page. Today they're one of the most useful parts of a business website. A good FAQ reduces repetitive phone calls, helps Google match your page to specific questions, and gives AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity a short, clear answer they can quote.

But most FAQs are written badly: vague questions, sales-pitch answers, and the same five questions on every page. Here's how to write FAQs that work.

Step 1: Find the real questions

Don't invent questions. Collect them from:

  • Your phone and WhatsApp: ask staff to note the top 10 questions customers ask before booking.
  • Google's "People also ask" box for your main searches.
  • Search Console: queries starting with how, what, which, can, is, does.
  • Reviews — yours and competitors' — which reveal worries and expectations.
  • Google Business Profile Q&A.

Step 2: Write answers that stand alone

AI systems and Google often lift a single answer out of the page. That answer must make sense on its own.

Weak answerStrong answer
"Yes, we do! Contact us today for the best service.""Yes. We provide 24×7 airport pickups from Ludhiana to Delhi Airport T1, T2 and T3. The driver tracks your flight and waits at the arrival gate."
"It depends on many factors.""Most small business websites take 2–4 weeks once content and photos are ready. E-commerce sites usually take 4–8 weeks."

Rules of thumb:

  1. Answer in the first sentence. Yes, no, a number, a time range — then explain.
  2. Keep it to 40–80 words for most answers.
  3. Repeat the subject. Say "Our Delhi airport taxi" instead of "it".
  4. Be specific with numbers, places, conditions.
  5. Be honest. If prices vary, explain what they vary with.

Step 3: Structure the section correctly

  • Use a clear heading such as "Frequently Asked Questions".
  • Put each question in its own heading (H3) and the answer in a paragraph directly below.
  • Keep the content visible on the page. Collapsible accordions are fine as long as the text is in the HTML.
  • Use 3–8 questions per page, chosen for that page's topic.

Step 4: Add FAQ schema (carefully)

FAQPage structured data marks up questions and answers in a machine-readable format. Google now shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites, so most businesses won't see the expandable FAQ in search results. However, structured data can still help search engines and other systems understand the content.

The rule: schema must match visible text exactly. Never put questions in schema that aren't on the page. See our schema markup guide for examples.

Step 5: Make each page's FAQ different

Copying the same FAQ onto 50 city pages creates duplicate content. Instead, tailor questions to each page:

  • Route page: travel time, toll charges, night travel, luggage, airport waiting time.
  • Service page: process, timeline, what's included, guarantees.
  • Product page: sizes, delivery time, returns, warranty.

Examples by industry

Clinic

"Do you accept walk-in patients?" — "Yes, walk-ins are seen between 10 am and 1 pm. For evening slots, book by phone or WhatsApp to avoid waiting."

Web design agency

"Will I own my website and domain?" — "Yes. The domain is registered in your name and you receive all login details at handover."

Mistakes to avoid

  • Questions nobody asks ("Why are we the best?").
  • Answers that only say "Contact us".
  • Out-of-date prices or policies.
  • Hidden FAQs loaded only by JavaScript after a click (some crawlers may miss them).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many FAQs should a page have?

Usually 3–8 relevant questions. More is fine on a dedicated FAQ page, as long as each answer is useful.

Do FAQs help with AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

They can. Clear question-and-answer content is easy for AI systems to understand and quote, though there's no guarantee of being cited.

Should I have one FAQ page or FAQs on every page?

Both work. Page-specific FAQs are usually more valuable because they match the visitor's intent on that page.

Can I use FAQ schema if Google doesn't show FAQ rich results for my site?

Yes, it does no harm when it matches the visible content, but don't expect a visual change in search results.
