Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so that search engines and AI assistants can lift a clear, correct answer from your page and show it directly to the user — in a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, a ChatGPT reply, or a voice answer from Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant. Traditional SEO tries to win a click. AEO tries to win the answer, and the brand mention that comes with it.
For a Ludhiana dentist, a Jalandhar taxi operator or a Chandigarh coaching institute, this matters because a growing share of searches now end without a click. The customer reads the answer, sees the business name, and calls or WhatsApps directly. If your competitor's page is the one being quoted, you are invisible even when you rank on page one.
How AEO is different from normal SEO
AEO does not replace SEO — it sits on top of it. Search engines still need to crawl, index and trust your site before they will quote it. What changes is how you write and format the content.
| Classic SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page and earn a click | Be the quoted answer (with or without a click) |
| Target query | Keywords like "website design Ludhiana" | Questions like "how much does a website cost in Ludhiana?" |
| Content shape | Long page optimised around a topic | Short, self-contained answers inside that page |
| Success metric | Position and clicks | Snippet/AI citations, brand searches, calls |
Where answer engines pick answers from
- Google featured snippets and "People also ask" — the oldest answer boxes, still very common for Indian "how/what/kitna" queries.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — AI-written summaries at the top of results that cite a few source pages. (See our Google AI Overviews SEO guide.)
- ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot — chat assistants that search the web and cite sources when answering.
- Voice assistants — usually read out a single answer, often taken from a featured snippet or the Google Business Profile.
The AEO checklist we use for client websites
1. Find the real questions your customers ask
Start with your phone and WhatsApp. Write down the 20 questions customers ask before they buy: price, timing, area served, documents needed, "is it safe", "how long does it take". Then check Google's "People also ask" box, the autocomplete suggestions and the Queries report in Google Search Console. Include Hinglish versions — "Ludhiana to Delhi taxi kitne ka hai" is a real search.
2. Answer first, explain later
Put a direct 40–60 word answer immediately under the question heading. Then add details, exceptions and examples. Answer engines prefer a paragraph that makes sense even when copied out of the page on its own.
Weak: "Pricing depends on many factors. Let us look at them one by one…"
Strong: "A professional 5-page business website in Ludhiana typically costs ₹8,000–₹25,000 in 2026, including mobile design, basic SEO and a contact form. E-commerce sites start higher because of payment gateway and product setup."
3. Use question-style headings
Write H2/H3 headings the way people ask: "How much does a taxi from Ludhiana to Delhi airport cost?" rather than "Pricing". This tells the engine exactly which question the next paragraph answers.
4. Format for extraction
- Numbered lists for steps ("How to register a .in domain").
- Tables for comparisons, prices and specifications.
- Short paragraphs (2–4 sentences) with one idea each.
- Definitions in the form "X is …" for "what is" questions.
5. Add structured data
Schema markup helps engines understand the page. The useful types for small businesses are LocalBusiness (or a specific sub-type), Service, FAQPage for genuine FAQ sections, Article for blog posts and BreadcrumbList. Mark up only what is visible on the page — invented ratings or hidden FAQs can get your rich results removed. Our schema markup guide explains each type.
6. Build entity trust
AI systems prefer to quote businesses they can verify. Keep your name, address and phone number identical on your website, Google Business Profile, JustDial, IndiaMART, Facebook and Instagram. Add an About page with real people, years in business and the cities you serve. Earn mentions on local news sites and industry directories.
7. Keep answers fresh
Prices, rules and timings change. A page that says "2023 rates" will be skipped for a newer source. Review your top pages every quarter, update numbers and the "last updated" date, and say so on the page.
8. Optimise the Google Business Profile
For "near me" and voice questions, the answer often comes straight from the Business Profile. Fill every field, add services with descriptions, upload real photos, answer the Q&A section and reply to reviews. See our Google Maps ranking guide.
An example: AEO for a taxi service website
A one-way taxi company in Punjab wants to be the answer for "Ludhiana to Chandigarh taxi fare". A page built for AEO would have:
- H1: Ludhiana to Chandigarh Taxi — One Way & Round Trip
- Directly under it, a two-line answer with the fare range for sedan and SUV, distance (about 100 km) and travel time.
- A small table: car type, seats, one-way fare, round-trip fare.
- H2 questions: "Is toll included?", "Can I book at night?", "How do I pay?" — each with a short answer.
- Service schema with the route as
areaServed, and FAQPage schema for the visible questions. - A click-to-call and WhatsApp button next to the answer, because the person reading it is ready to book.
How to measure AEO results
- Search Console: watch impressions for question queries and pages gaining impressions without matching click growth — often a sign you are being shown as an answer.
- Branded searches: people who saw your name in an answer later search for it directly.
- Ask the assistants: once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your top 10 customer questions and note who is cited.
- Lead source: add "How did you find us?" to your enquiry form; "Google said…" and "ChatGPT suggested…" answers are now common.
Common AEO mistakes
- Hiding answers in images, sliders or PDFs that crawlers cannot read easily.
- Writing 300 words of introduction before the actual answer.
- Copy-pasting the same FAQ on 50 city pages — engines treat this as duplicate content.
- Adding FAQ or review schema for content that is not on the page.
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt without realising it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AEO only for big brands?
No. Local businesses often benefit more, because questions like "best web designer in Ludhiana" or "Amritsar to Delhi taxi fare" have fewer strong answers competing for them.
Does AEO reduce my website traffic?
Some simple informational questions will be answered without a click. But the visitors who do click, call or WhatsApp after seeing your answer are usually closer to buying, so lead quality tends to improve.
How long does AEO take to show results?
If your site is already indexed and trusted, reformatted pages can start appearing in snippets and AI answers within a few weeks. New sites first need the basic SEO foundation, which usually takes three to six months.
Do I need special software for AEO?
No. You need clear writing, clean HTML headings, correct schema markup and a fast, crawlable website. Google Search Console is free and enough to track progress.
