Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many Google results, with links to the web pages used to build the answer. They started in 2023 as the experimental "Search Generative Experience" (SGE), were renamed and launched widely in 2024, and have since rolled out in India — including answers in Hindi and other Indian languages. Google has also added AI Mode, a chat-style search tab for longer, follow-up questions.
For a business, the key question is simple: when Google writes the answer, is your website one of the cited sources?
What triggers an AI Overview
AI Overviews appear mostly for informational and "how / why / which" queries — "how to choose a web hosting plan", "documents needed for GST registration", "best time to visit Amritsar". They show less often for simple navigational or highly commercial searches like "Joboo Web contact" or "buy iPhone 16", where normal results, ads and maps still dominate. Local service searches ("taxi near me") are still led by the map pack and Business Profiles.
How Google picks the cited sources
Google says AI Overviews are built on its normal search ranking and quality systems. In practice the cited pages usually:
- already rank on the first page or two for the query or closely related sub-questions;
- contain a passage that answers one part of the question very directly;
- come from sites Google considers trustworthy on that topic;
- are crawlable, fast and not blocked by robots rules or
nosnippettags.
AI Overviews often break a question into sub-questions and pull a different source for each. That is an opportunity for smaller sites: you do not need to answer everything — you need to answer one part better than anyone else.
8 steps to get cited in AI Overviews
1. Get the SEO basics right first
If Google cannot crawl or rank your page, it will not cite it. Check indexing in Search Console, fix broken pages, add a proper sitemap, and make sure each page has a unique title and description.
2. Target question clusters, not single keywords
For "website cost in India", the follow-up questions are: cost by type, what is included, yearly renewal costs, freelancer vs agency, hidden charges. Cover the cluster on one strong page with clear sections.
3. Write "extractable" passages
Under each question heading, start with a one- or two-sentence answer that makes sense on its own. Then expand. Example: "Shared hosting for a small business website in India usually costs ₹1,500–₹4,000 per year. Pay more only if you expect high traffic or run an online store."
4. Add information other pages do not have
Google values original contribution. Add your own experience: real project timelines, the actual questions your customers ask, local prices, photos from your work, mistakes you have seen. A Ludhiana agency that explains real costs of Punjab taxi websites offers something a generic global article cannot.
5. Show who is behind the content
Put an author name or "Joboo Web team" line, a visible updated date, and a link to your About page. For money or health topics, cite official sources (RBI, GST portal, government sites).
6. Use tables and lists
Comparisons, steps and price ranges in tables or lists are easy for the system to reuse accurately.
7. Keep pages fast and mobile-friendly
Most Indian searches happen on mid-range Android phones over mobile data. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and keep Largest Contentful Paint under about 2.5 seconds.
8. Update regularly
Overviews prefer fresh information for topics that change — prices, rules, platform features. Review key pages every quarter.
Will AI Overviews reduce my clicks?
For simple facts, yes — some users will read the summary and leave. But three things are worth knowing:
- Clicks from AI Overview citations tend to be more qualified; people click when they want to act or need detail.
- Being cited builds brand recognition even without a click — people search your name later.
- Service businesses get most leads from Maps, calls and WhatsApp, which AI Overviews do not replace.
The answer is not to fight AI Overviews but to make sure your pages have a clear next step: call button, WhatsApp button, price list, booking form.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
You can use nosnippet or max-snippet controls on pages, but this also limits normal search snippets. Google-Extended in robots.txt controls use for Gemini model training, not Search. For most businesses, opting out costs more visibility than it saves.
How to track AI Overview visibility
- Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode appearances inside the normal Performance report (they are not separated). Watch impressions for question-type queries.
- Manually check your top 20 questions in an incognito window every month and note which sites are cited.
- Track branded searches and direct calls as indirect signals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SGE the same as AI Overviews?
Yes. Search Generative Experience was the testing name in Google's Labs. The feature was launched to the public as AI Overviews in 2024.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No special markup exists. Normal structured data (Article, FAQ, Product, LocalBusiness) helps Google understand your page, but content quality and ranking matter more.
Do AI Overviews show for local searches in Punjab?
Sometimes, especially for informational local queries like "best time to visit Golden Temple". For "near me" service searches, the map pack and Google Business Profiles still dominate.
How is AI Mode different?
AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience for complex questions with follow-ups. It uses the same principle — it reads and cites web pages — so the same optimisation applies.
