LLM SEO is the work of making your website easy for large language models (LLMs) — the AI systems behind ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Perplexity — to access, understand and cite. Where GEO is about your overall brand reputation in AI answers, LLM SEO is more hands-on: crawler access, page structure, clean text and factual content that a model can safely repeat.
Two ways an LLM "knows" your website
Understanding this split clears up most confusion about AI search:
- Training data — Models are trained on huge snapshots of the public web. If your brand was well-documented when the snapshot was taken, the model may know basic facts about you without searching. You cannot edit this directly; you influence it slowly through consistent public information.
- Live retrieval (search) — For local, recent or specific questions, assistants run a web search, fetch a few pages and summarise them, usually with links. This is where most small businesses can win today, and it behaves a lot like classic SEO.
Step 1: Let the right crawlers in
Each AI company uses named crawlers. The common ones are:
| Crawler (user-agent) | Company | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | ChatGPT search results and live page fetches |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collecting data for model training |
| Googlebot / Google-Extended | Search (incl. AI Overviews) / permission for Gemini training | |
| Bingbot | Microsoft | Bing and Copilot answers |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Perplexity answers |
| ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Training / Claude search |
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure you are not blocking these by accident. Also check that your hosting firewall or CDN "bot protection" is not returning 403 errors to them — this is surprisingly common on cheap shared hosting.
Step 2: Serve real text, fast
- Text in HTML. Prices, service lists, routes and contact details should be plain HTML text, not baked into banner images.
- Avoid JavaScript-only content. Many AI fetchers do not run JavaScript. If your page content appears only after scripts load, they may see an empty page. Server-rendered PHP pages are ideal.
- Speed. Live fetchers work with short timeouts. A page that takes 8 seconds on slow hosting may simply be skipped.
- Clean URLs like
/website-design-ludhianaare easier to understand than/page.php?id=27.
Step 3: Structure pages the way models read
LLMs split pages into chunks and look for passages that answer the user's question. Help them:
- One topic per page, with a descriptive H1.
- Question-style H2/H3 headings followed by a direct answer in the first sentence.
- Short paragraphs; one idea each.
- Lists for steps and features; tables for comparisons and prices.
- A short summary at the top of long guides.
Step 4: Write content a model can safely repeat
AI systems are tuned to avoid repeating doubtful claims. Content that gets cited tends to be:
- Specific — "Websites delivered in 5–7 working days after content is received" beats "fast delivery".
- Verifiable — consistent with your Google Business Profile and other listings.
- Attributed — written by a named person or business, with a visible "last updated" date.
- Balanced — explains when your service is not the right choice, too.
Step 5: Add structured data
JSON-LD schema gives machines labelled facts: Organization or LocalBusiness with sameAs links, Service for each service, Article with dates and author on blog posts, FAQPage for genuine FAQs and BreadcrumbList for site structure. Keep schema truthful — it must match what visitors can see.
Step 6: Consider an llms.txt file
llms.txt is a proposed standard (published in 2024) for a Markdown file at the root of your site that lists your most important pages with one-line descriptions. Some AI tools and developer platforms read it; Google has said it does not use it for search. It costs little to add, so we include one on client sites — but it is not a substitute for the steps above.
Step 7: Strengthen your entity outside the website
Models cross-check. A business with a complete Google Business Profile, consistent directory listings, genuine reviews and a few mentions on trusted local sites is much more likely to be named than one that exists only on its own website.
LLM SEO checklist
- robots.txt allows search-related AI crawlers.
- No firewall blocks or 403 errors for bots.
- Key content is in server-rendered HTML.
- Pages load in under about 2.5 seconds on mobile.
- Each page has one clear topic, H1 and question-based subheadings.
- Prices, areas served and contact details are written as text.
- Organization/LocalBusiness, Service, Article and FAQ schema are valid.
- About page names the business owner/team and history.
- NAP details match on Google Business Profile and directories.
- Important pages show a "last updated" date and are reviewed every few months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?
That is a business decision. Blocking GPTBot stops your content being used for OpenAI model training, but ChatGPT search uses a separate crawler (OAI-SearchBot). Most local service businesses benefit from being visible, so they allow both.
Is LLM SEO different from normal SEO?
About 80% is the same: crawlable, fast, well-structured, trustworthy pages. The extra 20% is checking AI crawler access, writing self-contained answers and strengthening your brand entity across the web.
Can a new website appear in ChatGPT answers?
Yes, through live search. If the page is indexed by search engines and clearly answers the question, it can be cited even if the model never saw your brand during training.
Do I need to rewrite my whole website?
Usually not. Start with your ten most important pages: homepage, main services, top city pages and your best blog posts.
