GA4 Ecommerce Tracking Setup: Track Product Views, Carts and Purchases

Without e-commerce tracking, you can't see which products, pages or ads actually make sales. Here's how to set up GA4 e-commerce tracking correctly.

Google Analytics 4 can show far more than visitors. With GA4 ecommerce tracking setup done properly, you can see which products are viewed, added to cart and purchased, where buyers come from, and how much revenue each channel brings.

The key ecommerce events

GA4 uses recommended event names. The most important ones:

Event When it fires
view_item_list Category or listing page viewed
view_item Product page viewed
add_to_cart Item added to cart
view_cart Cart page viewed
begin_checkout Checkout started
add_shipping_info / add_payment_info Checkout steps completed
purchase Order completed
refund Order refunded

Each event includes an items array (item ID, name, price, quantity, category, variant), and purchase includes transaction_id, value, currency, tax and shipping.

Setup options

WooCommerce

Use a well-maintained GA4 integration plugin, or Google Tag Manager with a data layer plugin. Check that it sends the recommended event names.

Shopify

Use Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or its customer events/pixels features to connect GA4.

Custom store

Your developer pushes events to the data layer and sends them via GA4 (gtag) or Google Tag Manager. See Google Tag Manager for beginners.

The purchase event: get it right

  • Fire it once, on the order confirmation, not on every refresh of the thank-you page
  • Use the real order ID as transaction_id to avoid duplicates
  • Send revenue in INR (currency: "INR")
  • Decide whether value includes tax and shipping, and be consistent
  • For payments confirmed later (e.g. pending UPI), consider sending purchase server-side via the Measurement Protocol

Test before trusting the data

  1. Use GA4 DebugView or Tag Assistant
  2. Place test orders: check every event and item parameter
  3. Compare a week of GA4 revenue with your store's orders. Small differences are normal (ad blockers, consent), big ones mean a problem

Useful reports

  • Monetization → Ecommerce purchases: best-selling products
  • Acquisition reports: revenue by source/medium and campaign
  • Funnel exploration: product view → add to cart → checkout → purchase; shows where people drop off
  • Link Google Ads and Merchant Center for ad and product performance. See Merchant Center free listings

Privacy

Don't send personal data (names, phone numbers, emails) to GA4. Update your privacy policy to mention analytics.

FAQs

Why doesn't GA4 revenue match my orders exactly?

Ad blockers, cookie consent, cancelled orders and refunds cause gaps. Aim for close agreement, not perfection.

How long until data appears?

Real-time and DebugView show events within seconds; standard reports can take up to a day or two.
