Gemini is Google's family of AI models. For website owners it matters in three places: AI Overviews (AI summaries on top of Google results), AI Mode (Google's conversational search tab) and the standalone Gemini app, which can search Google to answer questions. "Gemini SEO" simply means making your site the source these products read, trust and cite.
How each Gemini surface uses your site
| Surface | Where it gets information | What decides inclusion |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews | Google Search index | Normal Google ranking and quality systems, plus a passage that answers the question |
| AI Mode | Google Search index, Maps, Shopping data | Same as above, across many related sub-queries |
| Gemini app | Google Search grounding + model knowledge | Search visibility and brand recognition |
The common thread is Google Search. There is no separate "Gemini index" to submit to — if you are well indexed and trusted in Google Search, you are eligible everywhere.
What Google-Extended does (and does not do)
Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that lets publishers decide whether their content can be used to improve Gemini models and for certain Gemini grounding uses. Google has stated that it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search — and AI Overviews are part of Search. So blocking Google-Extended will not remove you from AI Overviews, and allowing it will not boost your rankings. Most small businesses leave it allowed.
Practical steps to improve Gemini visibility
1. Strong Google Search fundamentals
Indexed pages, a clean sitemap, correct canonical tags, mobile-friendly and fast pages, HTTPS, no accidental noindex. Check the Pages report in Search Console monthly.
2. Cover the whole question
AI Mode breaks a query into many sub-questions ("query fan-out"). A page that covers the main question plus its natural follow-ups — cost, time, options, risks, next steps — has more chances to be used. For example, a page on "website for a coaching institute" should also cover cost, must-have features, admission enquiry forms and how to rank locally.
3. Clear, extractable answers
Question-style subheadings with a direct first sentence; lists for steps; tables for comparisons. Avoid long, vague introductions.
4. Experience and trust
Google's quality guidelines emphasise experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T). Show real work: project photos, case studies, named authors, your address and phone, and genuine reviews.
5. Google Business Profile and Merchant Center
For local and shopping queries, Gemini surfaces use Google's own business and product data. A complete Business Profile (for services) and accurate Merchant Center product feed (for e-commerce) feed directly into AI answers.
6. Structured data
Organization/LocalBusiness, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage schema help Google understand entities and page purpose. Keep markup accurate and visible on the page.
7. Images and video
Gemini is multimodal — it understands images and video. Use descriptive file names and alt text, original photos rather than stock images, and embed relevant YouTube videos on service pages.
8. Hindi and regional languages
AI Overviews and Gemini support Hindi and several Indian languages. If your customers search in Hindi or Punjabi, consider translated versions of your key pages with proper hreflang tags.
Measuring results
- Search Console counts AI Overview and AI Mode appearances inside the normal Performance report — watch impressions on question queries.
- In GA4, look for referrals from gemini.google.com for Gemini app traffic.
- Manually test key questions in AI Mode and the Gemini app each month.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gemini SEO different from Google SEO?
Mostly no. Gemini surfaces rely on Google Search. The difference is emphasis: complete coverage of follow-up questions, extractable answers, and strong entity trust.
Should I block Google-Extended?
Only if you specifically do not want your content used to improve Gemini models. It does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews.
Can my small business appear in AI Mode?
Yes. AI Mode often includes local businesses for service queries, drawing on Google Business Profiles and websites.
Does Gemini read my images?
Gemini models can understand images, and Google Search uses image understanding. Original, well-labelled photos help both image search and AI answers.
