When you run Facebook or Instagram ads, Meta's system decides who sees them. It learns from conversion signals — leads, purchases, bookings — that your website or CRM sends back. If those signals are missing or inaccurate, Meta optimises for the wrong people: clicks that never become customers. Two tools send these signals: the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API (CAPI).
Meta Pixel: browser-side tracking
The Pixel is a piece of JavaScript code on your website. When a visitor from your ad views a page or completes an action, the browser sends an event to Meta. It's quick to install — directly in your site's header, through Google Tag Manager, or through e-commerce platform integrations.
Its limitation: browser-based tracking can be blocked or reduced by ad blockers, privacy settings, cookie restrictions and some browsers. So some conversions go unreported.
Conversions API: server-side tracking
CAPI sends the same events from your server (or CRM) directly to Meta. Because it doesn't rely on the browser, it's more reliable. It can also send events that happen offline or later — for example when a lead becomes a paying customer.
Meta recommends using both together.
Which events to track
| Business type | Key events |
|---|---|
| Service business | Lead (form submitted), Contact (call or WhatsApp click), Schedule (booking) |
| Online store | ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase (with value) |
| Coaching / education | Lead, CompleteRegistration (demo class) |
| Real estate | Lead, Schedule (site visit), qualified lead from CRM |
Choose the event closest to real business value that happens often enough for Meta to learn from — typically Lead or Purchase.
Deduplication: avoid counting twice
If both Pixel and CAPI send the same lead, Meta needs to know it's one event. Send the same event name and a shared event ID from both sources. Meta then deduplicates them. Without this, conversions are double-counted and reports become unreliable.
Customer information and privacy
CAPI can include customer information such as email or phone number to help Meta match events to users. This information is hashed (converted to an irreversible code) before sending. Even so, you must:
- Mention advertising and tracking in your privacy policy.
- Only send data you're allowed to use, following Indian data protection rules. See DPDP checklist.
- Never send sensitive information, such as health conditions, in event names or parameters.
Healthcare, finance and some other categories face extra restrictions on what can be tracked and targeted.
How to set up (overview)
- In Meta Events Manager, create a dataset (Pixel) and note its ID.
- Install the Pixel base code site-wide, or through Google Tag Manager. See GTM for beginners.
- Add standard events at the right moments — for example Lead on the thank-you page. See thank-you pages.
- Set up CAPI: through your platform's integration, a partner tool, or a developer sending events from your server with an access token.
- Use the same event IDs for deduplication.
- Verify your domain in Meta Business settings.
- Test with Events Manager's Test Events tool, then check event match quality.
Sending quality back to Meta
The biggest improvement often comes from telling Meta which leads became customers. If your CRM marks leads as "qualified" or "converted", sending those events back helps Meta find more people like your real customers. See getting quality leads from Meta and simple CRMs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Pixel alone enough?
It works, but CAPI adds reliability. For businesses spending regularly on Meta ads, using both is recommended.
Do I need a developer for CAPI?
Platforms like Shopify and some WordPress plugins offer built-in integrations. Custom PHP sites need developer setup.
Can I track WhatsApp clicks?
Yes, as a Contact or custom event when the WhatsApp button is clicked.
Why are Meta conversions different from GA4?
The platforms use different attribution windows and methods. Use each for its own purpose and compare with real leads in your CRM.
