Google uses the mobile version of your website for indexing and ranking. This is called mobile-first indexing. If something is missing on your mobile view (text, links, images or structured data), Google may not count it, even if it's visible on desktop.
Checklist
Content parity
- [ ] Same main content on mobile and desktop (text, headings, FAQs)
- [ ] Content in accordions or tabs on mobile is fine, as long as it's in the HTML
- [ ] No "desktop-only" sections with important information
- [ ] Same internal links available on mobile (menus, footer links, related posts)
Metadata
- [ ] Same title tags and meta descriptions on both versions
- [ ] Same robots meta tags (no accidental
noindexon mobile) - [ ] Canonicals consistent
Structured data
- [ ] Same schema on mobile as desktop (Organization, LocalBusiness, Breadcrumb, FAQ, Product)
- [ ] URLs inside structured data point to the correct pages
Images and video
- [ ] Same important images on mobile, with alt text. See image SEO
- [ ] Images not loaded only after user interaction
- [ ] Supported formats, reasonable sizes. See responsive images
Crawlability
- [ ] Googlebot smartphone isn't blocked from CSS, JS or images in robots.txt
- [ ] Lazy-loaded content loads without requiring clicks or swipes
Usability and speed
- [ ] Responsive layout; no horizontal scrolling at 360 px width
- [ ] Text readable without zoom (16 px body text)
- [ ] Tap targets large enough and spaced apart
- [ ] Fast loading on mobile networks. See PageSpeed Insights explained
- [ ] No intrusive pop-ups covering content
Separate mobile sites (m.example.com)
If you still run a separate mobile site:
- [ ] Correct rel="alternate" and rel="canonical" annotations
- [ ] Same content and structured data as desktop
- [ ] Consider moving to a responsive design. It's simpler and recommended
How to check
- Search Console → URL Inspection: test the live URL and view the crawled page as Googlebot smartphone
- Search Console → Pages: check indexing issues
- Your own phone: browse key pages; compare against desktop section by section
- Chrome DevTools device mode: quick checks at different widths
Common mistakes on Indian business sites
- Hiding service descriptions or FAQs on mobile "to save space"
- Removing footer links and city/service links on mobile
- Mobile menus that rely on JavaScript without real links
- Huge banner sliders pushing content far down
- Click-to-call missing on mobile

FAQs
Is a responsive website enough for mobile-first indexing?
A responsive site serves the same HTML to all devices, which makes parity easy. You still need to check speed, usability and hidden content.
Does desktop still matter?
Yes, for users. But for Google indexing, the mobile version is what counts.
