When a long weekend comes up, Shimla and Kasauli are the first hill stations many families in Chandigarh and Punjab think of. They're close enough for a short trip, have plenty of hotels, and offer cool weather, colonial architecture and mountain views. Travelling by taxi avoids parking hassles and lets everyone enjoy the drive.
Traffic, weather and road conditions change. Check current advisories before you go, especially in monsoon and snow season.
Distances and travel times
| Route | Approximate distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh → Kasauli | About 60–65 km | 1.5–2 hours |
| Chandigarh → Shimla | About 110–120 km | 3–4 hours |
| Ludhiana → Shimla | About 210–220 km | 5–6 hours |
| Patiala → Shimla | About 170–180 km | 4.5–5.5 hours |
The route goes through Zirakpur or Panchkula to Parwanoo, then up via Dharampur (turn-off for Kasauli) and Solan to Shimla. Weekend traffic at Parwanoo and near Shimla can add hours — leave early in the morning.
A relaxed 3-day plan
Day 1: Kasauli
- Leave by 7 am; breakfast stop on the way.
- Explore Kasauli's Mall Road, Christ Church and quiet walking lanes.
- Sunset at a viewpoint (some areas are cantonment-controlled — follow signage and photography rules).
- Stay overnight in Kasauli.
Day 2: Shimla
- Drive to Shimla via Solan (about 2–3 hours).
- Walk the Mall Road, the Ridge, Christ Church and Lakkar Bazaar. Private vehicles aren't allowed on parts of the Mall — your driver will drop you at a suitable point.
- Optional: Jakhoo Temple by ropeway or a steep walk.
Day 3: Kufri and return
- Morning visit to Kufri or another nearby spot (local union rules may require local vehicles for some sightseeing — ask your operator).
- Start the return by early afternoon to avoid evening traffic jams down to Parwanoo.
For a 2-day version, choose either Kasauli or Shimla, not both.
Best time to go
- March–June: pleasant; busiest season.
- July–September: misty and green; watch for landslide alerts.
- October–November: clear views, cool days.
- December–February: cold, possible snow in Shimla and Kufri; roads may be slippery.
Car choice and fare
A sedan is fine for 2–3 people. Families with elders or more luggage are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta. Fares are usually per km or a package price, plus tolls, parking and Himachal entry tax for out-of-state taxis. Ask for an all-inclusive quote. See taxi fare explained and which car to book.
Practical tips
- Book hotels early for long weekends and festive holidays.
- Wear comfortable shoes — Shimla is best explored on foot, with many slopes and steps.
- Carry a light jacket even in summer.
- Keep motion-sickness remedies handy for winding roads.
- Avoid single-use plastic; Himachal has strict rules on plastic and littering.
- Consider the Kalka–Shimla toy train one way for a memorable experience — book in advance, and arrange for the taxi to meet you.
Extend the trip
With an extra day or two, add Chail (palace and cricket ground history), Naldehra, or the apple-growing areas beyond Shimla in season. Families with young children often enjoy the Timber Trail area near Parwanoo and short stops at Solan on the way back. Discuss additions with your operator before you leave so the fare and kilometres are agreed upfront.
Shimla traffic tips
- Avoid arriving on Friday evening and leaving on Sunday evening if possible.
- Choose a hotel with parking or near a drop point to avoid long walks with luggage.
- Let the driver suggest the best timing to cross Parwanoo and Solan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a day trip to Shimla from Chandigarh possible?
Yes, but you'll spend 6–8 hours in the car. A day trip to Kasauli is more relaxing.
Can the taxi go on Shimla's Mall Road?

For a weekend, a round trip with the same car and driver is usually more convenient.
