Mata Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills near Katra (Jammu & Kashmir) is one of the most visited shrines in India, and Punjab families make the trip all year round — especially during Navratri and school holidays. Travelling by taxi is popular because it's flexible and comfortable for groups and elders. Here's what to know.
Yatra registration rules, helicopter bookings and timings are managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Always check their official website for current procedures before you travel.
The route
From most of Punjab, the road goes via Pathankot and Jammu to Katra (the base town). Typical driving times in normal conditions:
| From | Approx. distance to Katra | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Amritsar | ~250 km | 5–6 hours |
| Jalandhar | ~250 km | 5–6 hours |
| Ludhiana | ~310 km | 6–7 hours |
| Chandigarh | ~370 km | 7–8 hours |
Distances and times are approximate and vary with route, traffic and checkpoints. The Pathankot–Jammu stretch can be slow during peak seasons.
Which car to book
- 2–3 people: sedan is fine for the drive to Katra.
- Families of 4–6 or with elders: Innova Crysta for comfort.
- Groups of 8+: tempo traveller.
Since many families stay 1–2 nights in Katra, book a round trip with driver stay, and confirm the driver's night allowance and parking charges. See choosing the right car.
At Katra
- Registration: pilgrims need yatra registration (RFID card) — usually available online in advance and at counters in Katra. Carry valid photo ID.
- Trek options: walk (about 12–13 km one way to the Bhawan), ponies, palkis, battery cars on part of the route, or helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat (book early; limited seats).
- Stay: hotels in Katra range widely; book ahead for Navratri and holiday weekends.
Suggested 2-day plan
- Day 1: leave Punjab early morning, reach Katra by afternoon, complete registration, rest. Start the trek in the evening if you prefer walking in cooler hours (many pilgrims trek through the night).
- Day 2: darshan, optional Bhairon temple visit, descend, rest, and drive back — or stay a second night and leave the next morning.
Tips for elders and children
- Use battery car, pony or palki services for parts of the route, or the helicopter if booked.
- Carry light woollens — nights get cold even in summer at higher altitude.
- Keep medicines, water and light snacks.
- Don't overpack; small backpacks are easier on the trek.
