VAPT testing stands for Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing. It's a structured check of your website, app, network or servers to find security weaknesses before attackers do. In India, VAPT is often required by banks, payment partners, enterprise clients and government tenders.

VA vs PT

Vulnerability Assessment Penetration Testing
Goal Find as many known weaknesses as possible Prove which weaknesses can actually be exploited
Method Mostly automated scanning + review Manual testing by skilled testers
Output List of issues with severity Exploited paths, impact and evidence

Together they give both breadth and real-world depth.

What can be tested

  • Web applications: login, booking, payments, admin panels, APIs
  • Mobile apps and their back-end APIs
  • Networks: firewalls, routers, open ports
  • Cloud configurations
  • Internal systems and Wi-Fi

Common findings on small business websites

  • Outdated CMS/plugins and server software
  • SQL injection or XSS in custom forms. See PHP security
  • Weak admin passwords and no brute-force protection. See brute force attacks
  • Exposed backups or .git folders
  • Missing security headers
  • Insecure file uploads

When you need it

  • Before launching a portal with payments or personal data
  • When a bank, payment gateway or client asks for a report
  • For government or PSU work, where CERT-In empanelled auditors may be required
  • After major changes to your application
  • Annually for important systems

Cost factors

Scope (number of pages, roles, APIs), type of testing (black box vs grey box), retesting, report format and whether a CERT-In empanelled auditor is required. Get a written scope before comparing quotes.

How to prepare

  1. Define scope and provide test accounts
  2. Test on a staging copy where possible; take backups first
  3. Tell your host to avoid the test being blocked as an attack
  4. Fix findings by severity and request a retest for a clean report

FAQs

Is an automated scan the same as VAPT?

No. Scans are part of VA; real penetration testing needs skilled manual work.

Will testing break my site?

Professional testers agree rules of engagement to avoid disruption, but backups are always wise.
