If your website runs on WordPress, you'll want an SEO plugin to manage titles, descriptions, sitemaps and structured data. The three most common choices are Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO (AIOSEO). All three do the basics well. The differences are in extras, interface and pricing.
Plugins change quickly; check each one's current feature list before deciding.
What every SEO plugin should handle
- Custom title tags and meta descriptions for every page. See writing titles that get clicks
- XML sitemap generation
- Canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content
- Noindex settings for thin pages (tags, search results, thank-you pages)
- Breadcrumbs and basic schema (Organization/LocalBusiness, Article)
- Open Graph tags for WhatsApp and social sharing
All three do these.
Yoast SEO
The oldest and most widely used. - Strengths: stable, well-documented, conservative defaults, readability analysis, large community - Limits: several features (redirect manager, multiple focus keywords, some schema types) need the premium version - Best for: people who value stability and simplicity
Rank Math
Grew fast with a generous free version. - Strengths: many features in the free plan (more schema types, redirections, 404 monitor, local SEO basics), modular so you can switch features off - Limits: so many options it can overwhelm beginners; enabling every module adds weight - Best for: users who want many features without paying, and are happy to configure them
All in One SEO (AIOSEO)
- Strengths: clean setup wizard, good local SEO add-ons, TruSEO on-page checks
- Limits: many advanced features are in paid tiers
- Best for: beginners who want guided setup, and businesses wanting local SEO tools in a paid bundle
Comparison at a glance
| Yoast | Rank Math | AIOSEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free version strength | Good | Very strong | Good |
| Beginner friendliness | High | Medium | High |
| Schema options (free) | Basic | Extensive | Moderate |
| Redirect manager (free) | No | Yes | Paid |
| Local SEO | Paid add-on | Basic free, more in Pro | Paid add-on |
Don't over-trust the green lights
All three show scores or traffic lights for "SEO" and "readability". They're useful reminders, but chasing a green light by stuffing keywords makes content worse. Write for the reader first. Google cares about genuinely helpful content. See semantic SEO.
Switching plugins safely
All three offer import tools for the others' settings. To switch: 1. Take a full backup 2. Install the new plugin and run its importer 3. Spot-check titles, descriptions and the sitemap on key pages 4. Deactivate and delete the old plugin 5. Check Search Console for errors over the next two weeks
Never run two SEO plugins at once. You'll get duplicate tags and conflicting schema.
Our take
Any of the three is fine for a typical business website. Choose Rank Math for maximum free features, Yoast for stability and simplicity, or AIOSEO for guided setup. More important than the plugin is good content, a fast site and a complete Google Business Profile.
