For a taxi business, the driver is the customer experience. A great website and Google profile bring bookings, but one rude, late or unsafe driver can bring a one-star review that undoes months of marketing. A simple, consistent hiring and training process protects your business.

Step 1: Documents and verification

  • Valid driving licence with the right category and commercial endorsement where required.
  • Aadhaar or other identity proof, and address proof.
  • Police verification certificate.
  • Previous employer references (call them).
  • Medical fitness — especially eyesight — for drivers doing night and long trips.
  • Keep copies in a secure file; this is sensitive personal data.

Step 2: Practical driving test

  • Highway driving: lane discipline, safe overtaking, speed control.
  • City driving and parking.
  • Hill driving if they'll do Himachal or J&K routes.
  • Night driving experience.
  • Basic vehicle checks: tyres, oil, coolant, spare wheel.

Step 3: Route knowledge

Drivers should know your main routes: airport terminals, toll plazas, safe food stops, alternate routes during traffic or fog. Create a simple route sheet for each popular route and share it on WhatsApp.

Step 4: Customer behaviour training

  • Greet customers politely; help with luggage.
  • Call the customer 30–60 minutes before pickup and on arrival.
  • No smoking, no loud music, no personal calls while driving.
  • Follow the customer's AC and music preferences.
  • Never argue about fares — refer to the office.
  • Respect women passengers, elders and families; share live location if requested.

Step 5: Safety rules

  • Seatbelts for driver and passengers.
  • No mobile use while driving; use a phone holder for navigation.
  • Rest rules: no driving beyond safe hours; breaks every 2–3 hours on long trips.
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol.
  • Speed limits respected — consider GPS trackers with speed alerts.

Step 6: Appearance and vehicle standards

Simple uniform or neat dress, clean car inside and out, water bottles and tissues, phone charger. Small touches lead to five-star reviews.

Step 7: Track performance

  • On-time pickup rate.
  • Customer feedback and reviews mentioning the driver.
  • Fuel efficiency and vehicle care.
  • Complaints and incidents.

Reward good drivers publicly (with bonuses or recognition) — retention matters as much as hiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should drivers be on salary or commission?

Both models exist. Salary plus trip allowance gives more control; commission suits attached vehicles. Choose what encourages good behaviour.

How do I handle a customer complaint about a driver?

Call the customer, listen, apologise where needed, speak to the driver, and take action. Reply publicly to reviews calmly.

Is police verification mandatory?

It's strongly recommended and often expected by corporate clients and families. Check local requirements.
